IGNIS, a vertically integrated energy company, and Acciona, a global sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy conglomerate have established a joint venture (JV) to develop a data center in Segovia, Spain. They will also build a solar photovoltaic plant alongside the data center to provide renewable energy to power the facility.
The companies formalized the partnership through IGNIS Data Epta, the project company established by IGNIS in 2024. Through the agreement Acciona has acquired a 50 percent stake in the company and IGNIS retains the remaining 50 percent.
According to a press release, IGNIS had already secured the project’s grid access and connection permits through two subsidiaries before the transaction. Acciona organized the companies as joint developers after IGNIS completed key steps in preparing the project for development which adds expansion into the data center market as Acciona is targeting 2GW of data center capacity and has created a dedicated Acciona Data Centers unit to manage its activities in the sector.
The Segovia partnership also brings together two established areas of activity for the companies which are IGNIS’s renewable energy and project development business and Acciona’s infrastructure and construction operations. The companies have not disclosed an official timetable or capacity for the planned data center.
According to Mordor Intelligence, Spain’s data center market is projected to reach US$ 7.74 billion in 2026, up from US$ 6.89 billion in 2025, and is expected to grow to US$ 13.84 billion by 2031, representing a 12.34 percent CAGR during 2026–2031. In terms of IT load capacity, the market is forecast to expand from 1.64 GW in 2025 to 4.79 GW by 2030, reflecting a 23.92 percent CAGR over 2025–2030. “Strong hyperscale commitments, rapid expansion of submarine cables, and abundant availability of renewable power position Spain as Southern Europe’s digital infrastructure hub,” finds Mordor Intelligence.
