Global digital infrastructure provider Equinix has entered into a renewable energy Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in Singapore, with Flo Energy Singapore (Flo), one of Singapore’s largest independent electricity providers, to use solar energy to power its facilities in the Southeast Asian technology hub.
This is the fourth such agreement in the past two years, and is expected to deliver at least 11.5MWp of renewable energy capacity generated from industrial and commercial rooftop solar installations across the country. It is also in line with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030. The agreement also includes an option for Equinix to expand the capacity to up to 50MWp over time.
With this latest agreement, Equinix will expand its local renewable energy portfolio in Singapore to a cumulative 215MWp by 2028. Collectively, these agreements are expected to generate about 250,000 MWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to the annual charging energy for roughly 60,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in Singapore.
“Singapore’s position as a trusted global AI and Digital Hub will be underpinned by digital infrastructure that is resilient, sustainable and built for the future,” said Yee May Leong, Managing Director, Singapore, Equinix. “Our fourth PPA is a significant milestone that reflects the power of collaboration across Singapore’s public and private sectors. As demand for digital infrastructure continues to accelerate, Equinix remains committed to supporting Singapore’s position as a global digital hub while advancing the nation’s sustainability goals.”
Matthijs Guichelaar, CEO, Flo, said, “With Singapore’s limited space, we need to think differently about how we make renewable energy more accessible for businesses with renewable aspirations. By bringing together generation from commercial and industrial rooftop solar projects across Singapore, this agreement demonstrates how we can help businesses support renewable energy at scale through our Data Centre Solutions, even in a land-constrained market.”
Soon Chen Kang, Senior Research Analyst, 451 Research, S&P Global Market Intelligence, said, “Singapore’s data center sector is entering a new phase in which energy availability and sustainability considerations are becoming increasingly strategic. Equinix’s latest agreement highlights how operators are diversifying their renewable energy sourcing models and collaborating with a wider ecosystem of partners. In a market shaped by land and grid constraints, multi-stakeholder approaches will play a critical role in supporting the continued growth and decarbonization of digital infrastructure.”
The agreement with Flo broadens Equinix’s renewable energy sourcing strategy in Singapore by expanding participation from private-sector renewable energy providers. It complements Equinix’s existing renewable energy agreements and participation in national initiatives, including SolarNova 7 and JTC Jurong Island, creating a more diversified and resilient pathway to renewable energy coverage in a land and resource-constrained market.
Equinix is the first customer secured under Flo’s newly launched Data Centre Solutions, which is also available to data center operators in Australia through Flo’s local business. Including this PPA, Equinix has more than 1,490 MW of wind and solar PPAs under contract across 11 countries, including Australia, India, Japan and Singapore. Together, these initiatives support Equinix’s broader commitment to scaling renewable energy coverage across its global platform and enabling a more sustainable digital future.
Meanwhile, Equinix is also investing in other energy resilience initiatives. The company recently announced a multi-year funding program of more than S$ 9 million to support research into alternative clean energy sources, including geothermal energy and small modular reactors (SMRs).
