Malaysia’s National AI Office (NAIO) is set to be formally empowered on July 28 to oversee and coordinate artificial intelligence (AI) matters, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. NAIO currently operates under the umbrella of MyDIGITAL Corporation.

Elaborating, Gobind said NAIO will oversee policies, governance and the AI ecosystem, as well as assisting entities that can help develop AI towards Malaysia’s vision of an AI nation by 2030.

NAIO was approved by the Cabinet on Aug 28, 2024 and was tasked with positioning Malaysia as a regional leader in AI.

In a related matter, Malaysia’s AI Governance Framework is still in the drafting stage, the minister said.  Gobind was speaking at the launch of the Digital Realty Multi-Site Data Centre in Kuala Lumpur today.
