Meta is ramping up its investment in artificial intelligence with plans to spend more than US$ 600 billion in the US by 2028 on AI technology, infrastructure, and workforce development. These AI-optimized data centers are critical to support American economic growth for next-generation AI products.

The official confirmation from Meta comes close at the heels of a Reuters report last Friday, where it said that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg had told U.S. President Donald Trump, that Meta will invest “at least $600 billion” in the U.S. over the next several years at a White House dinner in September.

Now, in an official statement, Meta has confirmed these ambitious investment plans, saying, “At Meta, we’re focused on creating the next generation of AI products and building personal superintelligence for everyone. Data centers are crucial to reaching these goals and helping America maintain its technological edge. That’s why we’re investing in building industry-leading AI data centers right here in the US. We’re committing over $600 billion in the US by 2028 to support AI technology, infrastructure, and workforce expansion — and our investments are already having an impact.”

It further said that it was committed to sustainability in its data center operations, was working closely with local utilities to meet energy and water needs, funding hundreds of millions of dollars in grid upgrades, and contributing to 15 GW of new energy capacity nationwide. The company aims to become water-positive by 2030.

It also showcased commitment to tapping into and developing local talent saying that since 2010, Meta has been a major customer of the U.S. based general contractors and manufacturers, channelling more than US$ 20 billion to subcontractors, including steel workers, pipefitters, electricians, and fiber technicians, who are helping build the next generation of AI infrastructure.

Readers would recall that  in Q1 2025, Meta had announced plans to invest up to US$ 65 billion by the end of this year to expand its AI infrastructure. The company plans to conclude the year with over 1.3 million graphic processing units (GPUs) for powering AI workloads, and aims to bring 1GW of computing power online by 2026. As part of this in October this year, Meta entered into a joint venture with Blue Owl Capital to own the Hyperion AI data center campus in Louisiana.
