A 3,000-acre tech park in Sarawak is set to host artificial intelligence (AI) data centres to be powered by a 300-megawatt large-scale solar power plant and a 600-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, according to reports. The tech park, Kota Petra Green Technology Park (KPGTP), will be jointly developed by Zecon Berhad, the land owner, and the Sarawak Data Centre Park, and will be powered entirely by renewable energy with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) being the main energy partner, said Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, State Minister for Utility and Telecommunication recently during a function in Kuching, Sarawak’s state capital. Sarawak is part of East Malaysia, and is located on the island of Borneo.

“The energy storage system will power AI data centre and high-tech industries, thus reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to green energy and sustainable development,” Julaihi said, adding that demand for secure, green and ethically managed data centres has risen across ASEAN, and Sarawak is strategically positioned to meet this regional demand.

According to Zecon’s website, there are six sites planned for the AI data centres. As a Managed Industrial Park (MIP), KPGTP is fully integrated with green high-technology comprising Spacetech, Greentech, Smart Manufacturing, Agritech and Biotech, Data Centres, Smart Mining and sustainable township development. The masterplan also included a centralised Circular Water Treatment and Waste Management Centre.

In October 2024, Zecon signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC) and Centre For Technology Excellence Sarawak Sdn Bhd (CENTEXS) for the joint development of KPGTP. SDEC will provide telecommunication services to the green technology park, while CENTEXS will provide capacity building at KPGTP through industry-based competency training and skills development, as well as development of technology testbeds and technology applications towards commercialisation.
